Abstract

The Evolution of Korean Nationalism and its impact on Korea-Japan Relations: A Preliminary Essay for Analytic ResearchNam, Ki Jeong (Kookmin University)After the conclusion of unequal treaty with Japan in 1876, Korean nationalism underwent ‘independence without modernization (the Great Empire of Korea)’ and ‘modernization without independence (Japanese Occupation of Korea)’. This historical context split Korean nationalism into ‘nationalism for independence’ and ‘nationalism for modernization’. Especially, under the Japanese occupation, the two Korean nationalisms fell into the difficulty, namely ‘the offset combination of independence and modernization’. After the liberation from Japan, the two Korean nationalisms tried to achieve its goal alternately. Under the Rhee Syngman regime, ‘nationalism for independence’ overwhelmed ‘nationalism for modernization’. Consequently, while Korea tried to punish Japan, Japan neglected or reacted against Korea. Under the Chang Myeon and Park Chunghee regime, modernization was chosen as the national goal, rather than independence. In this period, Korea did not accuse Japan of the colonization, but tried to get cooperation from Japan. After the democratization, the two Korean nationalisms seem to be trying to overcome the offset combination, and to transfigure it into the synergetic combination.
