Abstract
Firms and industry structure have been evolved in responding to the environment change they serve. In old days, a few and huge manufacturer has dominated market; however, firms are getting slimmer and industries are getting fragmented. Before mid 90'2, a supply chain used be a linear; however, the supplier base structure also has been changed into network structure. During the 90's, most firms started outsourcing their minor activities and they focus on their core functionalities. Even those days, firms have maintained the minimum functional span, e.g., marketing, manufacturing and product development. These days, several firms are funning their business with a single functionality our of the minimum functional span. In this study, we identify three dimensions for the evolution of firms and industry structure and propose three determinants groups those accelerate or decelerate the evolution. We defined three dimensions: the span of process, the supplier base structure and the inter-organizational relationships. Also, we proposed three determinants groups: product and/or service, transaction and/or purchasing pattern and organization and/or governance structure of the industry. We proposed a profile analysis in order to forecast the evolution path and speed.
