우리에게 1950년 8월 1일 형성된 낙동강 방어선은 잘 알려져 있으나, 이 방어선 바로 전에 형성되었던 영덕-낙동강 방어선에 대해서는 익숙하지 않다. 1950년 7월 14일 북한군이 금강 방어선을 넘자 워커 장군은 그다음 방어선으로 영덕-낙동강 방어선 점령을 지시했다. 이 명령에 따라 7월 16일부터 全 부대는 ‘영동-금천-상주-함창-예천-안동-영덕’에 이르는 방어선을 점령하기 시작했다. 그리고 이 방어선은 8월 8일까지 방어 위치를 고수했다. 시기적으로만 따져 보더라도 1950년 8월 1일 낙동강 방어선이 형성되었기 때문에, 7월 16일부터 8월 8일까지 이어진 영덕-낙동강 방어선이 낙동강 방어선 형성에 큰 역할을 했다는 것을 짐작할 수 있다. 영덕-낙동강 방어선은 낙동강 방어선 형성 시기와 가장 근접해있으며 이 방어선이 지탱되지 않았더라면 1950년 8월 1일의 낙동강 방어선은 존재하지 않았을 것이라는 생각이 자연스럽게 유도되기 때문이다.
Abstract
This study examines the background and substance of the Yong Dok-Nak dong River defense line, which was formed on July 20, 1950, during the Korean War. The Yong Dok-Nak dong River defense line was an early stage of the Nak Dong River defense line. The form of the Yong Dok-Nak dong River defense line was the line connecting the east and the west. In addition, the allied forces and the South Korean military command recognized the Yong Dok-Nak dong River defense line as the last stop. The significance of the Yong Dok-Nak dong River defense line is as follows. First, it made future operations such as Nak dong River defense operations and Incheon landing operations possible. Second, by defending Pohang Port and Yeongil Airfield, combat power continued to accumulate on the Korean Peninsula. Third, it played a decisive role in forming the Nak dong River defense line.
