초록
Through intertextual literary analysis of sonnets and narrative complaints, this article examines how male poets establish their poetic authority by ventriloquizing female voices as portrayed in the convention of female complaints in 1590s England. Even though female figures in complaints are given a space to contest their situations, their voices are appropriated by sonnet speakers who come in to moralize their stories as exemplified in Daniel’s The Complaint of Rosamond and Lodge’s The Complaint of Elstred. In both poems, Rosamond and Elstred make themselves symbols of feminine shame, arising from the pursuit of vainglory. While Drayton’s virtuous Matilda exerts a much stronger authorial power in verse, fame is not bestowed upon her; instead, it is replaced by the poet’s pursuit of literary and national fame. With this analysis of female complaints, this article illustrates the gender ideology of fame and authorship in early modern English poetry.
