Abstract
This article is aimed at giving light on Bhartṛhari’s concept of guṇa ‘quality’ through the analysis of ‘Guṇa-samuddeśa’, the title of the 5th section of Vākyapadīya Ⅲ. The 2nd chapter of this article tries to present the concepts of quality developed by the Vaiśeṣika school and Patañjali. The 3rd chapter of this article, by analysing the kārikās of ‘Guṇa-samuddeśa’, defines the concept of quality in terms of substance and deals with the functions quality performs in linguistic expressions. The concept of quality is said to be originally developed by the Vaiśeṣika. It was also dealt with from the grammatical viewpoints by the Sanskrit grammarians such as Vyāḍi, Kātyāyana, Patañjali, etc. The notions and viewpoints of those philosophers and grammarians influenced on Bhartṛhari’s ideas about quality. The commentaries on the sūtras of Pāṇini regarding the terms guṇa and guṇavacana and especially the Mahābhāṣya on P 5.1.119 are the main basis of Bhartṛhari’s definition of quality. Bhartṛhari defines quality in terms of substance which is intimately related with the former. Quality rests on substance and that is why it distinguishes its substratum from other substrata. It distinguishes its substratum by qualifying the domain of the latter, through which substances can be expressed in words. When a word presents a quality as something separate and independent, it cannot serve to determine an object. Thus, it does not become a quality any more. Only a distinguishing quality can be considered a quality and that is why it has to be subordinate to an object. Another characteristic of quality is that difference of degree in an object can be expressed through it. That quality through which an object comes within the range of words is the very one through which difference of degree is also expressed. And difference of degree is expressed by the suffix. When a word presents a quality as something independent, difference of degree in it can be expressed only through another quality. An object, in itself, does not admit of any degree, but it acquires it through such a difference in its quality.
