Abstract
This paper aims to make clear the methods of renunciation in India based on the study of the Manusmṛti and its annotation. According to the Manusmṛti, an apparent criterion for the renunciation is to concentrate on the self and the Brahman, being free from restraint of the sacred fire(śrautāgni) and the memorial service described in the Vedās. In this perspective, vānaprastha, a forest-dwelling stage of the Brahmanic scheme of life is not a step of renunciation. However, in the stage the hermit is lost in meditation with transforming the external sacred fire into the internal one and living homeless, as well as bing in meditation of silence and training a mystical creed. In fact, these aspects are not different from the life of the saṁyāsin, the fourth stage of the Brahmanic scheme of life. Hence, the third stage Brahmanic scheme of life can be seen also as a period of renunciation. If there is a difference between two stages, while the third stage gives the first consideration to asceticism(tapas), the fourth stage gives the first primacy to meditation. Some interesting facts provided from the Manusmṛti and its annotation is that there is a method of renunciation without departing from the village and home.
