Abstract

Artistic dance differs from culture to culture with regards to the formal movement repertoire used for expression. The present study explores what the spectators composed by German and Korean perceive when they watch culturally different dance scenes. The hand movement behaviour of the participants, which they showed during verbal description of their dance appreciation, was analysed to relate the hand behaviour with their thoughts and feelings from dance appreciation. The ANOVA analysis of the frequency of hand movements resulted by use of the validated NEUROGES® system revealed that the participants executed significantly more conceptual hand movements such as gestures when they explained their appreciation of the Korean Sung-Mu than that of ballet Giselle. It is assumed that the participants deployed more gestures to express their appreciation of Sung-Mu comparing to Giselle, because they might have more difficulties to describe their impression from Sung-Mu sufficiently. The empirical methodology of this study provided reliable performance to have valuable insights into the cognitive process of dance that is a spatial topic. Furthermore, dance movements of the Korean traditional dance seem to have powerful potential for a global influence.
