Abstract
The Indian cultural area has been one of the birthplaces of many cultures since ancient times, and the most marked among the cultural spread of them was the spread of Indian religion. Specifically, Hinduism spread to many regions of Southeast Asia, and Buddhism spread not only to Southeast Asia but also to Korea and Japan via China. As India's religion spread to various Asian countries, their medicine, literature, music, and art moved together. In this process, some animals that did not exist outside India were introduced and replaced with animals from the region. A representative example is turtle species. The Sanskrit word for turtle, kūrma, collectively refers to land tortoise, hardshell freshwater turtle, softshell freshwater turtle, sea turtle, etc. As a result, many misinterpretations of turtles and transformations to other species occurred during the process of spreading Indian culture. In this paper, we will discuss the aspects of such misinterpretations and transformations, focusing on cases.
