Abstract
This paper aims to explain argument properties and event structure of change-of-state verbs in Korean by extending and developing Kim (2005). According to semantic properties of theme argument, event, and scalar properties, change-of-state verbs in Korean are classified into 3 types, gradable, semi-gradable and non-gradable. When a verb takes ‘dimension’ as its theme argument, it is gradable change-of-state verb with durativity and atelicity. When another takes ‘event’ as its theme argument, it is semi-gradable change-of-state verb with durativity and telicity. On the other hand, if a verb has physicial object as its theme, it is related to different scalar meaning and defined as non-gradable change-of-state verb with punctuality and telicitiy. The event structures for these different semantics of 3 type change-of-state verbs can be represented by the Generative Lexicon Theory (Pustejovsky, 1995).
