Abstract

The Recent Trends of Korean Studies in China Kim, Yun-tae This article reviewed 3,114 Korean studies in China from 1949 up to 1999. As the second chapter of this article explicates, Korean studies in China can be divided into three respective periods: 1) before the Reform and open-door policy. 2) 1980's, 3) 1990's. And each period produced a specific trend of Korean studies, reflecting the political and ideological situation of the given times.During the first period Korean studies in China was placed under the strong influence of ideological bias. However, namely this period witnessed the institutionalization of Korean studies. The second period is most interesting, Korean studies experienced a time of prosperity in various fields. The last, third period is closely connected with the establishment of diplomatic relations between Republic of Korea and China in 1992. The establishment of official relations between South Korea and China triggered among Chinese great interest on Korean studies as a whole, and major aspects of Korean economy, politics and literature. In view of all these points it can be said that Korean studies in China still have a great potentiality compared to that of other areas.
