Abstract
A Study on Zhang Hu's Companion and His Poetical Style Yoo, Sung-joon Zhang Hu(張祜 ?-853) is a late Tang poet known for his lyrical, romantic quatrains(絶句) and for similar qualities attributed to his life. By the record of 『Tang cai zi zhuan(唐才子傳)』, he was born in Nan Yang of Hu Bei province. A high officer Ling Hu Cu especially loved his literary talent, but a famous poet Yuan Zhen commented his poetical style, after that, he only lived in retirement at his home to write many poems and proses. For his lifelong search ended in 853, that a great number of his poems(353, 『Quan Tang Shi(全唐詩)』book 510-511) remain is in part the result of his careful editing, particularly of his earlier poems.Zhang Hu's companion is very numerous and so he kept many company with famous poets, politicians, monks, for example, Du Mu(杜牧), Shen Ya Zhi(沈亞之), Li She(李涉), Ling Hu Cu(令狐楚), priest Xie Heng(契衡上人) etc. Zhang Hu's quatrains tend to be more subdued than his longer poems, although internal rhyme, alliteration, repetition, and allusion still are abundant. The total effect remains one of smoothness and understatement, with most allusions evident and historical, and but a few altogether obscure.
