Abstract
This study examines the translation of honorific and humble language in the Korean drama Dae Jang Gum, by studying the dialogue between different social classes in the drama which reflects theunique social and cultural context of the traditional Korean society. By doing so, the author of this paper explores the way communication is being made between Korean culture and the others. In the translated version of Dae Jang Gum where Korean honorifics are translated into Chinese, the following patterns were discovered. In Korean language, the note of respect is expressed by adding "Shi" to the base of the inflected words of the subject. Chinese, however, lacks the equivalents for the Korean honorific markers such as proposition "Gaeseo" or suffix "Shi." Furthermore, suffixes in Chinese do not change. Therefore, the translator set the tone of respect by using an honorific pronoun, addressing a person with a respectful name (Mama or Naeuri), adding 淸 (please), using an inflection of words with a nuance of respect (verb, adjective), or by calling someone superior with his/her title. Meanwhile, the translation of humble language is carried out by using humble register (Gwain, Soin) or, as in the translation of respectful honorifics, by using the titles of the superior, respectful pronouns, names or inflected words, so as to elevate the status of the listener by humbling oneself.
