内村鑑三の回心自伝の考察
A Study on Uchimura Kanzo’s Spiritual Autobiography

Abstract
This study discusses what made Uchimura Kanzo evade mentioning his ill-fated marriage in his spiritual autobiography, and considers the distinction between the narrated life story and the experienced life history which underlies the conversion narrative. There are three viewpoints from which this issue is argued: situations in which he worked on this autobiography, his conversion experience, and the performative function of relating one's conversion. The consideration from the first viewpoint suggests that the projection of his mismarriage onto his other works allowed his silence on the misfortune in the work in question. The second standpoint leads us to focus on Uchimura's concept of the sin, which induced him to devalue the identification of particularsources of the sin. The consideration from the third perspective identifies two functions of conversion narrative, that is, so-called qualification-declaring function and faith-intensifying function. The first function urged him to eliminate details that brought about his conversion for purifying the nature of the conversion, and the secondfunction strengthened his conviction that his conversion was exactly what he thought was supposed to be. Furthermore, the third argument reinforces the significance of distinguishing between the narrated life story and the experienced life history in analyzing conversion narratives.
