China and Japan began the modern era by confronting each other. As Japan made earlier modernization and invaded into China, their relation has been that of conflicts and wars. During the cold war ear the two nations kept different ideologies and were in enmity. But as the relation between China and the US turned for the better, the diplomatic tie between China and Japan was established. Today China and Japan are again entering into the relation of conflict and confrontation due to Japan's distortion of history, shrine worship, and territorial dispute. As Chinese national power has leaped into prominence and Japanese economy has declined, they are now in competitive relation. It seems that their future relationship depends on what policy the US will choose. If the US takes sides with China, Japan will eventually make efforts to improve its relationship with China. If the US continues to put distance toward China and intends to control China by using Japan, the conflict and collision may be unavoidable.
