Abstract

Study on the Propensity to Folk of Wei Zhuang's Ci Hong, Byung-hye Wei Zhuang lived through a period of great disorder, the Wantang to the Wudai. Above all, the Huang Chao Revolt had the greatest impact on the Tang Dynasty. To escape from the revolt, Wei Zhuang wandered about several places of Jiangnan district, suffering from poverty and disease. On the other hand, he could come in close contact with popular song during this period, which probably had a great influence on the style of his Ci.In short, the characteristics in the expression of Wei Zhuang's Ci are plainness and directness. By such way of expression, his Ci has the gusto of clarity and simplicity. He wrote Ci as naturally as he talked. Occasionally such expression becomes the factor which decreases the implication and the echo of his works, on the other hand, but it makes clear context and excellent delivery of feeling. There are plenty of repeated word, colloquial expression and negatives in Wei Zhuang's Ci. Frequent use of negatives presumably implies his frustration and his negative attitude toward the reality, and plenty of repeated word and colloquial expression seems to be the influence from popular songs. The frank, bold and unrefined way of expression of feeling and song cycles are the elements of popular songs in his Ci. Song cycles being the prevalent method of popular songs that time are not found among the works of other literati before him. In the early Ci of literati, the peculiar gesto of Wei Zhuang's gave a great influence on later Ci.In conclusion, Wei Zhuangs Ci can be characterized by expansion of subject matters, expression of the propensity to folk - plain description and direct expression, clarity and simplicity of gusto, using of song cycles - approach to popular song. These characteristics surely became the foundation on which Ci could prosper for a long time as one of main genres in Chinese literature.
