Abstract

Shanghai Cooperation Organization(SCO) as a Regional Economic Cooperation Framework Park, Byung-in Since the establishment of Shanghai Cooperation Organization, economic cooperation in the region has been accelerated. Shanghai Cooperation Organization stems from 'Shanghai 5'which was launched in 1996 and China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan participated to promote confidence-building, disarmament in the border areas, and cooperation in the region. Shanghai Cooperation Organization initiated as a framework for politics and security in the region but recently it has been expanding its roles and influences in the economic arena in the region. Geographically the SOC's sphere of activity is the region which was formerly under the rule of the Soviet Union. It is also where interests of US, China and Russia conflict, which are countries that may affect the future of the Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, the area is abundant in strategically crucial resources such as oil and is endowed with other significant mineral resources. The region is strategically important as development of these resources in the region has not been initiated yet.Globalization of the economy and deepening economic integration and cooperation in the region will contribute to the improvement of the economic power and the status in international politics and economy. The six countries, based on the market economy, comply with the principles of equality, mutual interests, trade reciprocity, cooperation in the long run, and mutual prosperity. Fully taking advantage of the geographical factor and the economically complementary relationship, they will develop the economic area and trade. With these efforts, they will adopt policies which would allow them to facilitate economic activities in the region and cooperation in the border areas.
