Abstract

Dae Jang Gum's Cultural Word Huang, Ji-yeon Dae Jang Gum is the story of 16th century which happened at Chosun dynasty's Royal court. Chinese language and Korean language, especially ancient Korean language, have the same language element such as Chinese characters, so there are many homographic words in two languages. Because of those homographic Sino-Korean words, translators have difficulty to deliver the meaning of Korean native culture when they translate ancient Korean story into Chinese language. In this thesis, I analyzed how they translate the story of Dae Jang Gum's cultural Sino-Korean words in to Chinese. When they translate the names of official duty and title which are homographic words, even though they have same formed words in Chinese language, they still have semantic differences with the same form of Chinese words, thus they tried to express those words in a different way. However, when they translate the name of food or inanimate objects, they didn't care about to use Sino-Korean lexicon directly. The life style and environment between Korea and China is different. That's why the homographic words between two countries can remind the people of two countries of the different feelings. Therefore, translator should decide whether he use Sino-Korean words directly or change the form of the words in order to increase the interest about different culture and to make them understand the contents more easily.
