Abstract

A Study on Chinese Images in Jaeman Korean Literature Park, Nam-yong This thesis is a study on Chinese images represented in jaeman(residing in Manzhou) Korean literature. I have examined various images of China and Chinese people represented in their literature, dealing mainly with Korean writers who had done literary activities in Manzhou since 1930s. In the field of novels, I have examined representative works of Ju Yo seop, Park Gye ju, Park Yeong jun, An Su gil and etc. Big cities such as HaErBin, ChangChun, Longjing and etc as well as ShangHai are the setting for these works. Chinese people appear as landowners, bandits, soldiers, owners of an inn and etc, and are embodied as assailants who oppress and plunder immigrant Korean people. In the field of poems, I have examined poem worlds of Kim Jo gyu, Paek Seok and etc. They, poets who moved to Manzhou from Korea, embodied their perception of reality in a poetical way, experiencing a new world in Manzhou. Through this study, I have found that images of China and Chinese people in jaeman Korean literature appear as the negative other, and the Koreanness and the Chineseness were combined in jaeman Korean literature. I strongly believe that this study will make a contribution to understanding identity of Korean literature in the Manzhou era and comparing Korean and Chinese literature in the future.
