Abstract
The aim of this paper is to discuss what is the optimal diphthongs in modern Japanese. We reviewed the inventories of diphthongs which are mentioned in previous studies. Among them, Kubozono(2001, 2008, 2015) and Kubozono (2016) are full-scale discussions on diphthongs in Japanese, presenting one morphological and two phonological criteria that are recognized as diphthongs, monomorphemic and falling sonority, accentuation to head mora. And Kubozono (2008, 2015) propose a “Better nucleus hypothesis” to explain what the optimal diphthongs are. However, We reexamined three criteria and the “better syllable nucleus hypothesis” and found some problems. In particular, the “better syllable nucleus hypothesis” is based on the sonority scale based from F1 presented by Kasuya et al.(1968), and the larger of the difference in the sonority of two vowels, the better as the syllable nucleus. This hypothesis explains that /ai/ is better diphthong but /aɯ/ is not a diphthong. However, there is a problem that /oi/ and /ɯi/, which are recognized as a diphthong in many previous studies, are no longer a diphthong based on this hypothesis. As an alternative, we present the auditory distance of the two vowels based on Dispersion Theory(Lindblom 1986, Flemming 2004, Minkova and Stockwell 2003, Park 2007, Peterson 2016, 2018) and calculate the Euclidean distance of the two vowels and conclude that /oi/, /ai/ and /ɯi/ are generally recognized as diphthongs in Japanese, and /ae/ is also accepted as a dipthong in some cases.
