초록

This article is an attempt to reveal the Hikarugenji’s suffering of love with his wife Murasakinoue and the deep love toward his father Kiritsuboin as well as his son Yuhgiri through an interpretation of winter-phenomena such as snow grains, snow, ice and frost in Genji-monogatari. First, snow grains provide Hikarugenji a chance to make relation with young Murasakinoue who was similar to his forbidden lover Fujitsubo. Second, snow makes his wife Murasakinoue painful because it works as a background of Hikarugenji’s yearning or another love to Fujitsubo. It also appears as background when Hikarugenji misses Murasakinoue after her death and dead Fujitsubo and dead Kiritsuboin as well. Through these being background, snow became a symbol of ‘missing’ in Genji-monogatari. Third, ice and frost appear also as symbols of solitude or pain of loneliness. Thus, winter in Genji-monogatari can be interpreted as a season of painful love or endurance. However, it can be also counted as a season of recognition about the true love toward family members.
