Abstract

In this paper, we conduct an analysis of the utilization and content of ‘old practices(故事)’ of women in Chinese female-authored poems. Additionally, we provide a broad examination of the narrative meaning attributed by female authors. We delve into how female authors adeptly construct these ‘old practices’ as narratives of self-discovery. Female authors predominantly employ figures such as Wang Zhao-jun, Xishi, Yuji, Ban Jieyu, Yang Guifei, and Zhuo Wen-jun in their compositions. Through these portrayals, they present idealized images of women, champion the unjust sentiments of female characters, and skillfully transform these figures within the poems into proactive and dynamic characters. Furthermore, they re-examine the underlying causes that drive the development of these ‘old practices’. This is clearly illuminated through our analysis of the narrative grammar structure within the text. By employing this method, we gain insight into the process through which female writers establish a connection between the female characters in the text and their own selves, transcending the confines of conventional prototype research. This, in turn, can serve as a guiding principle for modern readers, offering a framework to reinterpret female character narratives as a transformative process of introspective healing.
