Abstract
A Study of Vietnamese Language's General Characteristic Vietnamese is the language that is used by about 83 million of people who reside in Indo-chinese peninsula. The invention of Vietnamese was made in Rome by Father Alexandre de Rhodes whoin1651compiledaVietnamese-Portuguese-Latindictionary, based on several Catholic priests' works for missionary purpose, and published a bilingual edition of Latin-Vietnamese catechism. Vietnamese was made through the a complicated process of contact and mix with various languages for a long period of time. Therefore, there are not a few cases in Vietnamese vocabulary that the derivation of a word is from those racial languages. In the meantime, Vietnamese borrowed Chinese character innumerably. General characteristics of Vietnamese are as follow: isolating language; a syllable can become one morpheme; word form does not change; has tones; pronunciation is very short and hard because of its monosyllable characteristics; and there are lots of expressions that the meaning does not change as the form of thay doi↔doi thay.
