Abstract

This study investigates social associations that constitute major parts of the Korean civil society, and attempts to analyze their networks and political and social attitudes. These social associations show many differences in ways of administrating organizations and recruiting new members. Regarding issues related to nationalism, major associations reveal contrasting attitudes and behavior at the individual level, and different patterns of administration and recruitment at the organizational level. Conservative associations and progressive associations reveal mutual heterogeneities, antagonism, and disruptions with regard to the discourse of nationalism. This is shown by individuals' opinions and attitudes regarding political and social aspects. Conservative associations recruit staff through personal ties, and operate on the basis of closed networks. Voluntary participations and open networks with other associations are found in progressive associations. Both types of associations approach the issue of nation and unification on the basis of dichotomous ways of thinking such as anti-North Korea/pro-North Korea and anti-Americanism/pro-Americanism. This is shown by staff's attitudes and opinions and associations' administration.
