Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine William Morris’s view of nature as presented in News from Nowhere from the perspective of Gernot Böhme’s ecological aesthetics. To this end, the study first explores Böhme’s view of nature in ecological aesthetics. According to Böhme, the nature we experience today is “socially constructed nature.” Böhme emphasizes the importance of how people perceive this nature bodily in their everyday lives. Next, the paper examines Morris’s view of nature as depicted in News from Nowhere. Through this analysis, it is revealed that although the nature in News from Nowhere is often described as idyllic and romantic, it is, in fact, socially constructed nature, one that is closely aligned with what we bodily sense in our daily lives. Finally, the study clarifies that both Morris’s view of nature in News from Nowhere and Böhme’s view of nature represent ecological perspectives that move beyond anthropocentric dichotomies. They focus not on nature grasped rationally but on nature experienced bodily, as well as nature that is socially constructed. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the views of nature and aesthetics of both Morris and Böhme. Furthermore, they expand the horizon of research on ecological aesthetics, emphasizing the significance of everyday experiences and practices.
