Abstract

This experimental study examines the influence of age in the acquisition of pronunciation in a group of Anglophone late learners of Spanish as a Second Language. According to the Critical Period Hypothesis, post-pubescent learners are doomed to failure. However, in the last 15 years some studies have shown that nativelike pronunciation is not out of grasp after puberty (approximately 12 years of age). The research presented here is based on the subjective evaluation by Spanish native speakers of two tasks: a read-aloud task and a spontaneous speech task. The study, although it presents small-scale results, proves that when the first immersion takes place at the age of 20 it is possible to get close to nativelikeness or even achieve it when learners have linguistic aptitude and they experience ideal learning conditions. Thus, while it hinders the acquisition of nativelike pronunciation, age does not prevent L2 adult learners from attaining good pronunciation when the right circumstances concur.
