Abstract

This article aimed to comprehend the discourse and political dynamics encompassing the Columbus statue and the Antimonument ‘la Justicia’ on Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma, employing the lens of visual politics. The process of transitioning visual representations, wherein the Columbus statue gives way to the Antimonument ‘Justice,’ encapsulates the ever-evolving and expansive nature of Paseo de la Reforma's political dynamics. Since the late 19th century, Paseo de la Reforma has been a site where the vibrancy of Mexican nationalism is visually reproduced. Political power has been wielded in a visual-political manner, offering interpretations and showcasing visual artifacts like Columbus statues and indigenous leaders as deemed necessary. The sudden emergence of the Antimonument ‘la Justicia’ at the former location of the Columbus statue on this avenue served as a platform for debating diverse political agendas. The Antimonument ‘la Justicia’ stands as a focal point for many feminist groups and women engaged in the struggle against all forms of discrimination and violence in Mexico. Furthermore, it embodies a discourse of resistance, rejecting the discourse propagated by the authorities through visual artifacts and shedding light on the issues the authorities attempt to conceal through these visual artifacts.
