초록

This paper was written for the purpose of investigating the issue of women as seen by Erasmus. This article examines the situation of women in the Reformation as a background for helping view Erasmus as a humanist. The Reformation was fully aware of the problem of human oppression and discrimination, but there was still a lack of acknowledging the rights of women fully in theory as well as in practice. Humanists in general were open to recognize women’s dignity and women’s education. Erasmus in particular had a more open and broad mind toward women’s issues. For this purpose this writer investigates Erasmus’s interpretation of the Bible regarding women and his finding of role-models there, his ideas about marriage and his view on women. Erasmus had a dream of reforming the society as well as Christianity through the preparation of women for a new era. However he was also son of his time. He did not overcome all limitations of appreciating women as equals even though he emphasized the equality of all human beings before God. He kept the hierarchy within marriage as well as in the social class system. Nevertheless he reevaluated the potential of women and offered equal educational opportunities for them. These are important contributions to the development of European civilization through Christianity oriented humanism. This study offers further research for developing a comparative study between reformers and Erasmus, and makes comparison among humanists. Also, it could be expanded to make a comparison with the Czech reformer Jan Amos Comenius who emphasized female education, incorporating ideas and practices for similar goals.
