이 글에서 논자는 오늘날의 지성계와 일반에 널리 퍼진 숙명론적 노동 종말 담론과 그 안에서 주도적인 위치를 점해 온 노동 없는 ‘여가 사회’의 비전에 초점을 맞추어, 그러한 비전이 내세우는 ‘노동으로부터의 해방’ 테제를 그것과 대비되는 ‘노동 내에서의 해방’ 테제에 준거해 비판적으로 검토해 보았다. 논자가 견지한 입각점은 우리가 최첨단 기술 덕에 아무리 노동을 덜 하게 되더라도 이 때문에 노동이 무의미해지지는 않는다는 단순한 인식이다. 일반적으로 한 사람의 직업으로 이해되는 노동은 그 사람의 삶에 ‘생계’와 ‘인정’과 ‘의미’를 대주는 가치의 공급원 역할을 수행한다. 그러나 노동 없는 ‘여가 사회’의 비전은 인간적인 일과 삶의 그러한 세 가지 의의소意義素를 점점 더 무력화할 위험이 있다. 이 때문에 우리는 노동 없는 ‘여가 사회’의 비전이 우리에게 약속인지 위협인지, 다시 말해 우리가 그러한 사회에 살기를 진정으로 소망할 수 있는지를 신중히 따져 봐야 한다. 이러한 관점에서 논자는 현대의 자동화 기술이 가시화한 노동일 단축의 가능성을, 노동을 소멸할 기회가 아니라 노동을 인간화할 기회로 활용하는 선택이 인간의 존엄성에 가장 잘 부응하는 길이라고 주장했다. 아울러 그러한 선택의 제도적인 핵심은 노동일 단축을 통한 노동 공유 처방임을, 그리고 이 처방의 진수는 ‘노동에서 여가로의 무모한 탈주’가 아니라 ‘노동과 여가의 인간적인 재설계와 균형적인 안배’에 있음을 강조했다.
Abstract
In this essay I focused my attention on the contemporary widespread fatalistic discourses on the ‘end of work’ and their main vision of ‘leisure society without work’, and critically examined its thesis of the ‘liberation from work’, based on another thesis of the ‘liberation within work’ contrasted with the former. My simple and consistent standpoint is that, however less we would work in the future in virtue of highly developed technologies, this would not make our work meaningless. In general, work as a human’s job has been playing the role of the provider of such values as the ‘personal livelihood’, the ‘social recognition’ and the ‘ethical meaningfulness’ in his or her life. But the vision of ‘leisure society without work’ seems to threaten to nullify those three semantic factors of human work. Therefore, we should carefully ask ourselves whether that vision is a promise or a threat to us, or, in other words, whether or not we could truly wish we would live in that society. Considering these points, I argued that we should not use the possibility of the shortening of working hours opened up by modern automation technologies as the opportunity of abolishing all human work, but as the one of humanizing it, and this option is a better way to answer to human dignity. In addition, I emphasized that its best institutional embodiment is the work-sharing program through the shortening of working hours, and its essence does not lie in the ‘reckless escape from work to leisure’, but in the ‘human redesign of both work and leisure and their balanced time distribution’.
