Abstract

Chinese characters are 'morpheme-syllable characters' that express morphemes and syllables at the same time and combine elements on a two-dimension. As is commonly mentioned, if calligraphy originated from the attributes of these Chinese characters, it is difficult to reconstruct the origin of calligraphy. This is because the beginning of Chinese characters is the origin of calligraphy. However, this property of Chinese characters is a necessary condition for calligraphy, but it cannot be sufficient condition. In order for Chinese character writing to develop into calligraphy, other catalysts were required. Starting with Oracle bone script, the shape of Chinese characters, which had been changing for more than 1,500 years, was standardized from Post-Han to North and South Wei Jin. As paper was invented and brush, ink, and inkstone were improved together, the physical foundation of writing changed. Since Post-Han, the tombstone culture has become very popular, and one by one, professional calligraphers gained fame. The first time that an article showing the meta-thinking of the theory of writing and the act of writing appears is also from Post-Han to North and South Wei Jin. These writings show that calligraphy has established its status as an independent art in which 'changing thoughts and demands' are projected. The thesis concluded that these consecutive changes occurred intensively between Post-Han to North and South Wei Jin, and the art genre of calligraphy was born as it was re-recognized as an objects expressing aesthetics rather than sign.
