초록
Education and research is the key function of university. As regional and national economy and industry tends to heavily rely on high level of science and technology, it is likely that cooperation between academia and industry is highly expected in various sources and channels. And South-East region in Korea is no exception, where automobile, shipbuilding and machinery industries play a major role in the regional economy. This paper focuses on analyzing university's general type of research as well as collaborative research with industrial firm(s) by applying relative comparative advantage and specialization degree index, and some other general analysis tools. The study shows that some leading universities in the region seem to have relatively lower level of comparative advantage in science and technology research areas where regional industry is highly and directly related to its competitiveness. This paper recommends two policy implications: (1)leading universities in the region in terms of general research activities should put more effort on transferring and disseminating their acquired and accumulated knowledge to major industry sectors in the region such as automobiles, shipbuildings and machines, (2)metro concept of the region (East-South Metro area, Dong-Nam Gwon)should be highly desirable and quickly implemented in terms of regional economies and public administrations among Busan and Ulsan Metro Cities, and Gyeongnam Province.
