초록
During the process of integrating post-1978 China into the international system, the Chinese government reconstructed national identity and extended the meaning/coverage of "Chinese" people to involve the transnational and overseas Chinese population in China's social and economic development. This paper argues that the development of Zhongguancun is best explained by the network formation of Chinese returnees. These returnees were integrated into the Chinese government's redefined concept of the Chinese nation, leading to their establishment in Zhongguancun. Both Zhongguancun and China have been able to reinforce their competitiveness in the world market by endowing transnational and overseas Chinese IT elites with privileges and assigning them social roles. These transnational and overseas Chinese people engaged in social and economic activities, exchanges, and mutual interactions, which gradually solidified their sense of unity and simultaneously encouraged them to build the Chinese national network. Through a case analysis of Zhongguancun, this paper demonstrates that one of the most important forces behind regional development is the (re)formation of national identities and networks.
