초록

The purpose of this paper is to explore a radical potentiality of “plurality” in Hannah Arendt’s political thought. Plurality is a consistent theme through her whole thought and it means diversity between men in the public sphere. However, as this conception has been generally considered with the public or political realm, then plurality has been nothing but one among people in privileged positions who can participate in political activities. Therefore in this paper I shall argue the way to overcome this implicit exclusion which has always attached to plurality. For this objective, I focus on the argument regarding “judgment” which Arendt presented in her old age. There is, however, a large question with this concept of judgment in her political thought, and it has bothered many researchers. That is to say, it is “Why there are not one but two theories of judgment in Arendt’s thought?” To this problem, I shall indicate that there is only one theory of judgment in her thought, not two theories, and that the radical dimension of plurality appeared not in the political actor but in the spectator who retreats from such a political action. Through analyzing plurality from this perspective, I would like to clarify that the range of the conception of plurality includes not only “here-now” in public realm, but also the potential others who are not here and the past others who are not now. At the end I conclude by considering the contemporary significance this radicalized plurality will have.
