Abstract
Slave trade in the Age of Exploration, which began in Europe, expanded to Europe and Africa, America, the Middle East, and Asia through colonial imperialism. At that time, the unfairness of slave trade can be evaluated by projecting the concept of fair trade in modern society. First, the object of slave trade was deprived of human will and freedom, controlled labor and life, and caused various conflicts due to forced migration. Second, slave trade increased regional inequality, led to civil war and war, and caused many victims and destruction. Third, slave trade contributed to the formation of an unfair economic structure. Fourth, slave trade caused serious population losses in Africa, disappeared opportunities for development, and caused social instability and personal life to collapse. Fifth, the sacrifice of slaves allowed Western society to accumulate wealth and became the background for driving modern economic growth. Sixth, slave trade caused kidnapping and looting, and wars between tribes, intensified division and conflict, and caused the breakdown of legislation, hindering interaction in international trade and delaying economic development. The international community's skepticism and reflection on slave trade is evolving into a so-called fair trade concept, which is now becoming a typical business practice in the international community thanks to the self-reflection of Western powers that led slave trade in the Age of Exploration. However, human rights abuses, forced labor, exploitation, environmental destruction, and economic inequality around the world can still be assessed as unfair trade similar to slave trade, and the international community’s legal and institutional response is required.
