Abstract
This study analyzes open-ended survey responses from 49 Korean classical music students enrolled at German public arts universities, exploring how musicians’ identities are formed within the context of transnational mobility. The research focuses on how early-career young musicians construct themselves and ascribe meaning through everyday practices. Theoretically, the study integrates Stuart Hall’s cultural identity theory, Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, and Wolfgang Welsch’s transculturality, proposing ‘selection–translation–placement’ as an analytical framework. The analysis reveals that participants understood ‘home’ as an emotional experience rather than a geographical location, and ‘Koreanness’ as a process of negotiation rather than an essence. ‘Music’ functioned as a language for narrating the self and a tool for relating to others, while repertoire selection, interpretation, and program placement emerged as practices through which musicians reconcile self and other, past and present, thereby reconstituting their identities. Major, religion, and length of residence shaped the contexts of these practices, and identity emerged not as a fixed attribute but as a process in which structure and agency interlock. By extending the study of musicians’ identity from work analysis to performance analysis, this research offers a new perspective for understanding artistic practice in the transnational era.
