Abstract
Those discourses spun by and around new media and digital revolution naturalize media history as a process of replacement of a preceding inferior medium by an acceding superior medium. However, as remediation theory persuasively refutes it, media and media practices do not develop in a linear way, drawing a nonᐨlinear genealogy of overlapping and repetition; references and crossᐨreferences. The recent academic practices of media archaeology, embracing a wide range of research trends including remediation theory, focus on excavating the strata of the buried past to write a new version of nonᐨlinear genealogy and counter history of media which will denaturalize the established history. This paper intends to throw light on the possibility of enhancing a fullᐨfledged form of materiality and performativity in the archaeological methodology, not simply confining it on a metaphorical dimension. In this respect, this paper reformulate the media as a series of artefacts from the viewpoint of problem settings and methodologies, among the many strands in the intellectual genealogy of media archaeology, which pay due attention to the materiality of media artefacts. Through this lens, this paper explores the potential of a multifaceted media genealogy as a heterogenous complex of materialᐨdiscourse formations that attempt to understand and describe media and media practices by way of the excavations of various kinds of physical properties sedimented within a specific media artefact, and of their arrangements in a specific form of seriation.
