Abstract
This study analyzes the censorship and resistance of publishing during the Fifth Republic of South Korea (Feb. 25, 1981 – Feb. 24, 1988) by focusing the characteristics of the book as a media-object. The censorship of publications during the Fifth Republic inherited the system of the Restoration regime of 1970s but became even more extensive and violent. At the same time, resistance from publishers also became more diverse, proactive, and organized. This study emphasizes on the fact that the primary subject and target of both censorship and resistance was the books themselves. By examining newspaper articles, testimonies from publishers, and literature on banned books, this study elucidates the epistemology of books, the ontological status of books as objects, the communication circuits surrounding books as media, and their relationship with censorship and resistance. While the regime outwardly promoted deregulation, it simultaneously pressured the sites of book production, restricted book distribution, controlled discourse, and even destroyed books to enforce coercive submission. However, as an unintended consequence of censorship, books as media-objects were circulated beyond the classification system and communication circuits defined by the regime. Publishers employed various tactical strategies—such as concealment, deception, reproduction, substitution, and collective mobilization—to resist censorship by leveraging the characteristics of books as media-objects. This study examines how publishing was regulated under the censorship system of the Fifth Republic and how publishers strategically utilized their medium to resist, thereby shedding light on the media conditions of censorship and resistance.
