Abstract

This study sought to explore journalists’ experiences and perceptions of the phenomenon and causes of news avoidance, as well as their perceived responses to news avoidance. It also explored whether there are differences, and if so, the insight of these differences between audience research findings and journalists’ perceptions of news avoidance. To do this, we conducted in-depth interviews with 20 journalists, including those from newspapers, broadcasters, and internet outlets. While the concept of news avoidance remains ambiguous academically and may vary depending on how it is measured, journalists have experienced the phenomenon through their own and others’ experiences. Despite this, there is a gap in perceptions between journalists and audiences regarding the concept and scope of news, the causes of news avoidance, and the types of news that audiences would be willing to actively engage with. Journalists still tend to emphasize the essence and attributes of news, whereas news audiences perceive the concept and scope of news differently. Journalists perceive the causes of news avoidance as issues related to media partisanship and the quality of news, similar to the reasons cited by news audiences. However, they pointed out that the greater problem lies in the real barriers, such as audience’s partisan news consumption behavior and the digital news distribution structure represented by portals, which inevitably lead to such outcomes. Even regarding the types of news audiences would be willing to engage with, journalists perceived that, in terms of news value, such news might not be desirable and would have low feasibility. Nevertheless, journalists share the perception that the media has self-inflicted the news avoidance phenomenon by failing to innovate in response to the changing media environment. Discussing news avoidance is not much different from revisiting the problems that have long been raised about our media. Therefore, it is necessary to seek solutions to news avoidance and suggest ways to expand journalistic practices and build relationships with users.
