Abstract

The purpose of the study was to explore infant teachers’ perceptions of young children’s interactions with peers and teachers’ supports for the children. The study focused on 36 child care teachers from 18 classes of 1- and 2-year-old infants which centers were located in the Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon provinces. Video on peer interactions among infants and teachers’ supports for them was recorded in the context of play and daily routines in the child care centers. Video-stimulated recall interviews were also conducted to gain teachers’ perspectives on peer interactions and their supports for young children. The collected data was analyzed based on text network analysis and topic modeling analysis using Netminer. Firstly, the study found that the teachers tended to consider play the most important factor for peer interactions and teachers’ support. Secondly, they tended to emphasize the importance of peer interactions through play, emotional expressions in the interactions, and the influences of parents on peer interactions. They also perceived the importance of teacher support considering infant children’s individual needs as well as gender differences. Additionally teachers of 1-year old infants recognized the importance of safety and daily routines for their children while those of 2-year old children emphasized the significance of teacher interventions and verbal expressions of emotions. Overall, this study is significant in that it expands the understanding of teachers’ perceptions on peer interactions among infants and their support.
