본 연구의 목적은 환경종합지수로서 최근에 국제기구에서 제시하고 있는 지속가능발전지수들을 검토하고 2005년 2월에 발표된 환경지속성지수(ESI)에 초점을 맞춰 신뢰성 및 타당성을 분석하여 문제점을 도출하고 개선방안을 제시하고자 한다. 2005 ESI에 대한 분석결과, ESI는 신뢰성과 타당성 측면에서 심각한 문제를 나타내고 있다. 핵심구성요인의 신뢰성 분석결과에서 5개의 핵심구성요인의 신뢰성은 낮게 나타나고 있어 내적일관성에 문제가 있음을 보여주고 있다. 또한 타당성 분석결과에서 환경시스템, 환경부하 저감, 사회․제도적 대응능력은 단일차원성, 집중타당성 그리고 판별타당성 같은 구성개념 타당성이 낮게 나타나고 있고 또한 기준타당성 측면에서 환경시스템 vs. 인간취약성 저감, 사회․제도적 대응능력, 지구환경관리 그리고 환경부하 저감 vs. 지구환경관리 간의 기준타당성 정도가 낮게 나타나고 있다. 더욱이 2005 ESI에 대한 구조방정식모형 분석결과에서 ESI 모형적합도가 낮게 나타나고 있어 ESI 모형과 자료가 잘 부합되지 않음을 보여주고 있다. 이러한 분석결과를 기초로 본 연구는 보다 개선된 ESI 개발을 위한 개선방안을 제시하고 있다.
Abstract
The purposes of this study are to investigate the reliability and validity of the 2005 environmental sustainability index (ESI) and to make suggestions for improving the ESI. The overall results indicate that the ESI has serious problems on the reliability and validity. The reliability tests show that the Cronbach alpha coefficients of the five environmental sustainbility components are low. The confirmatory factor analyses reveal that the constructs of environmental systems, reducing environmental stresses, social & institutional capacity to respond to environmental challenges have low convergent and discriminant validity. The correlational analyses also show that the criteria-related validity between environmental systems and reducing human vulnerability to environmental stresses, between environmental systems and social & institutional capacity to respond to environmental challenges, between environmental systems and global stewardship, and between reducing environmental stresses and global stewardship are low. Furthermore, the results of structural equation modeling (SEM) indicate that the fit indices of the ESI model are low and suggest a bad fit to the data. Based on these findings, this study discusses some considerations to improve the ESI.
