Abstract

This paper reviews an approach to interpreting social change from an ecological perspective and reviews previous studies on the correlation between social continuity and environmental change during the Bronze Age. Furthermore, it explores key considerations for advancing future research on the prosperity and decline of Bronze Age culture. Although previous studies regarding the climate of the Korean Bronze Age are limited, they can be summarized as follows: The impact of cooling trend on social structure has been discussed in connection with the onset of the Bronze Age, the development of agriculture during the Early Bronze Age, the expansion of arable land and rice cultivation due to alluvial developments, and the decline of the Songguk-ri culture. Additionally, pilot studies have applied models such as the Panarchy Adaptive Cycle to understand climate change not merely as a physical phenomenon but within a socio-economic context. Meanwhile, this paper examines the necessary steps to further research social change in the Bronze Age from an ecological perspective. It emphasizes that, alongside efforts to specify the actual ripple effects of climate change, a prior understanding of the complexity of Bronze Age social systems —which determines human response mechanisms to external variables— is essential. Specifically, this paper suggests the need for a review of the functioning of the overall economic system (including the production, distribution, and consumption of economic surplus) and the formation and operation of cultural resilience as observed in rituals and other crisis-response mechanisms.
