Abstract
The purpose of this article is to preliminarily examination under what conditions Chinese settlements on a height were formed and how they develop according to the times, focusing on the remains of the “Erlitou Period” and “Shang Period” in China’s “Centeral Plain Region(Zhongyuan)”. First, depending on the climate environment, people tend to move in search of suitable areas for life at the time. For example, due to the change of the Yellow River(Huanghe) around 1900 BC, the number of settlements on a height tended to increase during the Erlitou period, but from 1600 BC, the number of settlements on a height tended to decrease as the dry climate continued in the early Shang period due to a drop in temperature, and the wet climate from around 1400 BC led to a slight increase in the number of settlements on a height in the late period. Of course, in addition to these purposes, factors such as transportation and logistics, acquisition of resources, and abandonment also influenced the formation and disposal of settlements on a height. In terms of transportation and logistics, the Xiaqiyuan and Donglongsan sites are representative, and in terms of acquisition and abandonment of resource, the Dongxiafeng and the Yuanqunanguan(Yuanqushangcheng) settlements arerepresentative. In particular, the latter was formed for the acquisition of resources, but around 1400 B.C., it was eventually discarded due to the depletion of resources or the relative inefficiency of resource production.
