Abstract
This study explores the relationship between patriarchy families and the incidence of delinquency and tests this relationship in terms of gender. This study predicts that the effect of a patriarchal family on delinquency is stronger in males than in females and also attempts to explain this hypothesis in terms of socialization in the family and differential association processes. Using data from 715 male and female middle school students in Seoul, the results indicate that the effect of a patriarchal family upon the incidence of delinquency is stronger in males and that a patriarchal family leads to parent‐child conflicts, which in turn results in association with delinquent peers and delinquent behavior. In addition, our findings reveal that the effect of a patriarchal family on delinquency is also positive in females. However, the results also indicate that the mechanism which operates between patriarchal families and delinquency is different depending on gender.
