중학생들의 생활양식에 드러난 주거지역별 학교역할의 차이

본 연구는 사회경제적 차이가 주거분리로 이어지는 현상에 주목하여 계층별 주거분리가 뚜렷한 대전의 동구와 유성구의 중학교 3학년 학생들을 면담하고, 그들의 일상생활에 드러난 지역별 차이를 분석하였다. 그 결과 지역별로 학생들의 생활양식에서 뚜렷한 차이가 있음을 확인하였다. 유성구 학생들의 경우 방과 후는 물론 일부 학교생활조차 학원의 굴레에 갇혀 있었으며, 학력경쟁의 규범을 당연한 것으로 받아들이고 있었다. 반면, 동구 학생들은 덜 경쟁적이며, 방과 후 생활은 학교와 지역 사회의 방과 후 프로그램 참여여부에 따라 양상이 다르나, 특별한 프로그램에 참여하지 않는 학생들의 경우 대체로 방치되어 있었다. 교사에 대한 기대에서 동구 학생들은 따듯한 부모와 같은 교사상을, 유성구 학생들은 재미있고 친구 같은 선생님 상을 기대했다. 동구의 학교는 학습뿐만 아니라 다양한 돌봄의 기능을 수행하고 있는 반면, 유성구는 학원 등 사교육에 의해 학교역할이 제한되거나 방해받고 있었다. 이웃에 대한 이해에서도 동구 학생들은 사람을 중심으로 인식하고 있으며 지역사회의 기관, 단체의 프로그램에 적극적으로 참여하고 있었으나, 서구 학생들은 편의시설 및 문화공간을 중심으로 인식하며 지역사회에의 참여도 거의 없었다. 사회경제적으로 유리한 계층이 밀집된 지역에서는 학원이, 취약한 지역에서는 학교와 지역사회기관과 단체가 학생들의 일상생활에 주요한 영향력을 행사하는 것으로 보인다. 연구의 결과, 지역별로 차이를 보이는 학교, 지역사회기관 등의 역할의 재정립이 필요하다고 판단된다.
Abstract
Observing the increasing social-economic differences between neighborhoods, this study conducted in-depth interviews with middle school seniors at two social-economically different residential areas(RA), the disadvantaged east and the advantaged west of Daejeon City and analyzed the results. It did so to examine the school and neighborhood effects. The results identified differences in their interactions across RAs. Student life in the west is constrained by after school study (and even part of their school lives are constrained by private tutoring) and they accepted achievement competition as normal. However, student after school life in the east appeared to be somewhat neglected, even with accounting for some differences depending on the school’s role and other social program participation. While east students want their teachers to take the role of care givers like their parents, west students want teachers who are more like their friends, who do not push them to study. The roles of schools are diverse: one of two schools in the east played the role of a form of full-care giver which the other schools did not play. In the west, the school role was interfered with by private and after school tutoring. While some east students participated in programs run by other social institutions, west students are not concerned with them. We found the roles of the schools and other social institutions to be important in determining student interactions. Reestablishment of the roles of schools, private tutoring and social institutions are clearly required, even though their specific characters, values and objectives may differ.
