Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive overview of island tourism research in South Korea from 2001 to 2025 using topic modeling and content analysis. Analysis of publication trends, journal distribution, and TF–IDF key terms indicates that the field has progressively expanded, with The Journal of Korean Island serving as a key publication venue for island tourism scholarship. Topic modeling identifies eight latent thematic areas: mobility-based satisfaction (Topic 1); place characteristics and regional policy linkages (Topic 2); tourist evaluation and behavioral factors (Topic 3); ecology- and leisure-oriented research (Topic 4); festivals, infrastructure, facilities, and resident attitudes (Topic 5); healing resources and policy- and branding-oriented approaches (Topic 6); spatial structure, infrastructure, and inter-regional exchange networks (Topic 7); and destination choice factors shaped by perceived risks, constraints, motivations, and local context (Topic 8). The results demonstrate that island tourism research has evolved into a multidisciplinary field characterized by multiple thematic streams. High-gamma documents within each topic were examined to clarify underlying thematic structures and research trajectories. Based on these findings, the study offers implications for future academic research, as well as insights relevant to island tourism policy and industry development in Korea.
