Abstract

Jeon Byeong-sun’s 1967 novel Another Solitude was a bestseller and winner of the 5th Korean Women’s Literature Award, a work that combined both popularity and literary value. However, it needs to be reexamined because it was not properly evaluated academically and did not receive much attention from the literary world. The conditions of newspaper serialization in the 1960s served as both a constraint and an opportunity for female writers. Newspaper novels could not be free from the stigma of being commercial and popular, but they provided opportunities for female writers to write, and they were able to attract the public’s attention and promote awareness. This novel adopts the provocative subject of adultery into a familiar romance novel plot to appeal to the general reader. On the other hand, in a social atmosphere where neo-familism was becoming established as the norm of normalcy, it rearranges the unsettling love and shows a politics that is in conflict with the only life script called ‘romantic love.’ This novel, based on a love triangle, has two narratives: Gyeong-ok’s marriage story and Su-jin’s love story, which overlap and share the story of Young-jae. Gyeong-ok carries out the script of “romantic love” that ties together “ sex-love-marriage, ” but faithful implementation of normal family norms fails to guarantee the happiness she expected, and instead leads to women’s dependence and lack of subjectivity. Su- jin’s love, placed outside the family system, requires her to endure the discomfort of living a different life from the norms of normalcy, but it also shows that she can secure autonomy in her relationship with man because she can become economically independent in the public sphere, and thus become a true subject of love. In this way, Another Solitude serves as a public forum that exposes the reality of the neo-familial regime through the life of a confined housewife and raises the need to reinvent love to replace it. Thus, it explores the need for a feminist ethic that can crack the logic of developmental m odernization that is in collusion with patriarchy. Another Solitude, which established women as the subjects of love and attempted to introduce true love as a universal ethic, was a significant achievement in the field of women’s literature at the time.
