Abstract
This study investigated how grandparents’ provision of grandchild care affects financial transfers from their adult children over time. We analyzed data from 6,332 respondents aged 45-80 years, drawn from waves 2 (2008) through 7 (2018) of the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging. Using ordinary least squares and fixed-effects models on 25,201 person-year observations, we tested both short-term and long-term effects of grandchild care on the amount of financial transfers from adult children. Our findings showed that grandparents who provided grandchild care received 195% more financial support from their adult children than those who did not. The fixed-effects model suggested that respondents received 46% more financial support in years when they provided grandchild care than in years when they did not provide such care. This effect persisted over time. Grandchild care provision predicted increases of approximately 203-216% in financial transfers even ten years later. In addition, financial transfers were higher among grandparents with more children and those living in rural areas, whereas labor force participation was associated with lower levels of financial transfers. These results support intergenerational social exchange theory. The types of resources exchanged between generations observed in this study may reflect Korea’s family-centered cultural values and a policy environment with gaps in child care provision. Based on these findings, we offer several recommendations for policy and practice.
