Abstract
In this study, we conducted an inquiry activity for middle school science gifted students and investigated their perceptions of the inquiry process skills and of the class. The inquiry activities were organized using the inquiry process skills (problem recognition and hypothesis-setting, inquiry design and implementation, data collection, analysis and interpretation, conclusion derivation and generalization, communication and collaboration) presented in the 2022 revised science curriculum. The perception of the inquiry process skills was composed of importance perception and self-perception of each inquiry process skill, and the test was conducted before and after the class and analyzed using a paired sample t-test. In the perception test of the inquiry process skills, the students' responses were categorized by characteristics through discussion among researchers. Through the class, both the importance perception of the inquiry process skills and the awareness of self-ability of inquiry process skill were statistically significantly improved. And students recognized that the inquiry process skills were improved through the class of this study for the following reasons. First, the class structure that repeated basic inquiry activities every hour affected the improvement of inquiry ability. Second, the experience of conducting inquiry activities while continuously discussing with peers affected the improvement of inquiry ability. Third, the class structure that allowed students to take the lead in inquiry activities without the intervention of the instructor had a positive effect on the improvement of inquiry ability. Fourth, the class structure that newly organized the next class based on the results of each group rather than passively following the inquiry stage affected the improvement of inquiry ability.
