Abstract

The social media platform provides a series of personalized information based on the category of teenage girl. The majority of the information culled automatically consists of business advertisements. Teenage girls most frequently select fashion and beauty related content to learn about cutting edge fashion trends and which beauty products are popular. Keeping up with the latest fashion trends and ‘hot’ beauty items is an essential part of being attractive or ‘cool’ within this peer group. This consensus requires mutual approval and communication about which items gain popularity. This dynamic of collective acknowledgement often leads to consumption. Various desires are involved in these media activities and consumption practices: the desire to earn a good reputation; the self-management involved in achieving a desirable reputation; the gendered desire to appear as an attractive women. Social media activities and buying beauty commodities are also within the realm of ‘having fun’, ‘pastimes’, and ‘enjoyment’. Fashion and beauty related information gains its significance from various aspects of teenage girl’s lives, such as daily activities, future life prospects, ideal self-image, peer reputation, and maintaining friendships; it works as an organizing principle in everyday life beyond mere consumption and consumer rights.
