Abstract
This study sought to construct a model for cyber-bullying in mobile messenger use through the variables of parental and school strain, low self-control and mobile addition and to test it across four groups: male middle school, female middle school, male high school, and female high school students. Using data from 1,490 male and female middle and high school students in the Seoul and Kyunggi area, this study revealed different results across the four groups. It was found that parental strain has a direct and indirect effect on cyber-bullying, but it has a larger effect in female middle school students. In contrast, school strain has a larger effect on cyber-bullying in male students. The results show that school strain has an indirect effect in male middle school students and a direct effect in male high school students. It is also shown that low self-control has an influence on mobile phone addiction in all four groups, but it has a direct effect on cyber-bullying in both middle and high school female students. In addition, it was found that the effect of mobile phone addiction on cyber-bullying is statistically significant in both male and female middle school students, but its effect is larger in male students than in female students.
