Abstract
Excessive growth of algae in rivers threatens the safety of drinking water systems, requiring active management. In this context, there has been growing interest in applying advanced machine learning models to predict algal blooms. This study developed a gated recurrent unit (GRU) model to predict chlorophyll-a concentrations, a quantitative indicator of algal blooms, and examined the effect of applying reinforcement learning (RL) on its performance. Field monitoring data including water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and chlorophyll-a were used as input variables. The input sequences (Seq) were set to 1, 3, 5, and 7 days, while the prediction target was chlorophyll-a concentrations for the next 7 days (t+1 to t+7). The model performance varied depending on the input sequence. Among all cases, Seq 3 combined with RF achieved the highest performance with an Nash-sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of 0.520, while the corresponding model without RL showed an NSE of 0.506. In the case of Seq 1, the model with RL produced the second-highest performance with an NSE of 0.513, whereas the model without reinforcement learning achieved an NSE of 0.464, representing the largest performance gap between the two approaches. These results demonstrate the potential of RL to enhance the predictive performance of algal bloom models. Continuous research utilizing RL is needed to further improve the efficiency of field algal bloom management.
